Description

Andrew Williams, Bitter–Sweet and Rainshine

These two pieces have some Latin American influence but (the composer hopes) don’t descend into pastiche.  ‘Bitter–Sweet’ has a first subject – the ‘bitter’- in a tango rhythm with jagged discordant harmonies.  The ‘sweet’ resolution is a complete contrast: the tango rhythm remains quietly in the background, but the melody is warm and lush, with extended rich harmonies in the bass strings setting up lingering resonances.

‘Rainshine’, in dropped D tuning, also has a Latin feel to its opening, with a tense minor melody played in the bass strings and a rhythmic accompaniment in the trebles.  Its second subject is an upbeat celebratory rhythmic melody, and the piece then returns to the first subject to end.
