‘Borrowed’ has a straightforward opening, a simple sequence of chords in C with a descending bass-line, a little reminiscent of Pachelbel’s Canon.  As it develops, its theme emerges with internal syncopations and harmonic suspensions – measures and harmonies ‘borrowing’ time and tonality from their predecessors. It can be infuriatingly difficult to play, but it is fun to master, like solving a puzzle.  The listener is unaware of this: it sounds simple and melodic, but full of subtle subliminal hooks.
