Ange Turell, The Stream
Seven movements for solo guitar. The title for this work is referring to what poets and novelists sometimes call ”the Stream of Consciousness” – meaning a state of mind where associations are allowed to flow freely, resulting in works that may occur dreamlike and without any obvious structure. Such is the case with this suite, where the parts are just loosely held together and the musical ideas follow each other. I used an old English round as a motto and you can hear its simple melody being cited in the opening and closing of the suite. As I was listening quite a lot to the music of Bela Bartok during the period of composing, some echoes of his musical language may also be present at times. For performance, I suggest a listening and improvisational attitude. Play as if the music was unfolding at the moment.
